On Being Born
Just before the first Covid-19 lockdown, my mother died just two months before her 95th birthday. Reflecting about her role in giving me the gift of life, I decided to write a series of short essays starting with my birth, but quickly broadening to the whole subject of childbirth and its history. This book is dedicated to my mother's memory, but it is also intended to be a celebration of all mothers and their role in giving us all a start in life. It is also about the development of techniques to assist women at childbirth, which is a fascinating story, from the the first forceps to ultrasound and beyond.
